Merano is rich in must-see landmarks, from medieval city gates to the Tappeiner Promenade and castles such as Trauttmansdorff, with its botanical gardens, and the city’s Princely Castle, which was a residence of Archduke Sigismund of Austria. Also popular is the ancient Ortenstein tower, as well as the Gothic St. Nicholas Church and the St. Barbara’s Chapel, both built in the 15th century, while the Steinerner Steg stone bridge, dating from the 17th century, crosses the Passer River, which itself is home to the arched Wandelhalle with its famous waterside promenades.
