The redefinition of the area of Porta Volta, which is named after a gate in the 16th century walls that once surrounded the city, is an intrinsically Milanese project, taking up themes of local urbanism and architecture, and creating new emblems for this stylish city such as the “square of the future” Piazza Gae Aulenti. Take the Feltrinelli Porta Volta project, which will not only give the city a sizeable green lung (11,000 square meters to be precise) but also cafés, restaurants, and shops, as well as a library of historical archives. Probably the area’s most famous historical import though is Cimitero Monumentale—62 acres of tombs of all kinds of architectural styles, from Egyptian, neo-Roman, Byzantine to Art Nouveau and even postmodern.
