Location
Divided between the tangled, narrow medieval streets of Città Alta (Upper Town) and the modern Città Bassa (Lower Town), the city is connected by a funicular. Bergamo was ruled by Venice for over 300 years and there are many Venetian references in the architecture, such as the winged stone lion of St. Mark at Piazza Vecchia. The view from the San Virgilio fortress down to the Renaissance domes and towers, and the piazzas laid in geometrical symphony is a must at sundown.
