The stunning underlying feature of the interiors—carved walls showcasing geometric symbols from Sumba ikats—are augmented by Sumba-inspired treasures, bamboo, open-air bathtubs, private decks, gardens, and beach views.

Surrounded by lush vegetation and opening onto the beach, the accommodations are magnificent testaments to indoor-outdoor living. Wooden decks serve as the ideal spot for early-morning yoga or relaxing on a daybed, while carved walls behind the bed boards showcase beautiful Sumbese symbols. A luxury ceramics collection by Gaya Ceramics plays with a variety of local aesthetics. Furnishings in rattan, bamboo, and teak wood; textiles by Pierre Frey; and sleek sound systems by Klipsch complement terrazzo, polished concrete, and natural plaster, with the occasional table by Sarah Ellison catching the eye.

Spacious, modern structures with nature-inspired plant-based roofs that blend into the Sumba landscape are set directly on the beach, embraced by organic agricultural lands that keep the pantries stocked at the hotel’s two restaurants.

Cap Karoso’s modernist villas boast private swimming pools, a dash of Brutalism, and a serene sense of seclusion, making them perfect for a family or a romantic escape. Step outside to enjoy the awe-inspiring waters that surround the resort, with swimming, surfing, fishing, and snorkeling at one’s doorstep. A spa set in a traditional Sumbanese house and a yoga pavilion align body and mind.

Visiting international star chefs utilize the hotel’s organic farm during on-property residencies to create singular and unforgettable culinary experiences.

Intimate dinners at Julang restaurant and all-day casual dining at the Beach Club are infused with vegetables, herbs, eggs, and more from Cap Karoso’s fertile organic gardens. When guests are not enjoying grilled fish, handmade pasta, and other delectable dishes, they can learn about the hotel’s many efforts to give back to the local community through programs that teach local farmers and younger generations landscaping skills that they can bring to their own land.

Offbeat Destinations Everlasting traditions

Located in the unexplored Kodi region of West Sumba, Cap Karoso is surrounded by miles of wild pristine beaches and a few sparse, traditional villages.

These timeless villages are run according to the rhythms of sacred ceremonies and the words of local shamans. Guests can experience long-preserved cultures by interacting directly with local communities and partaking in traditional fishing, ikat weaving, the creation of natural dyes, and horseback riding.
