Location
A place of wonder and maze-like narrow lanes, old town Malia is a sure stop when touring Crete. Just outside of town, take in the ruins of the Minoan Palace. Nearby Potamos Beach is an uncrowded sandy escape near the palace. Not-to-be-missed side trips from Malia include The Palace of Knossos, a maze of living and work spaces built around 2000 BC; the famously impregnable Fortress Spinalonga, built by Venetian rulers in the 16th century; and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, home to the remains of the 3,000-year-old Minoan civilization.
