Seezeitlodge Hotel & Spa is set on the serene Lake Bostalsee in northeastern Saarland, Germany. Thousands of years ago, the Celts—who believed that certain landscapes were sacred—occupied this land for its powerful energetic properties. Today, Seezeitlodge Hotel & Spa aims to bring that connection to its guests through the hotel’s architecture, cuisine, activities, and mindfulness program. Berlin’s GRAFT Architects approached the land with respect, taking inspiration from the natural topography to develop the striking shape of the building. Before opening, the hotel launched a reforestation program that continues today: more than 350 trees and shrubs were planted when the hotel expanded in 2023. The hotel’s ten bee colonies also look out for the land, pollinating local plants—and creating the LUMI honey served in the restaurant in the process. For the restaurant, the hotel sources ingredients from local producers and grows its own herbs. Unused food is donated to associations, food banks, and soup kitchens. For these efforts and more, the hotel has earned Level 4 GreenSign certification.

The hotel avoids plastic packaging and uses reusable containers when possible. Food-sharing is practiced in the restaurant, donating unused food to food banks and associations.

Rooms feature water-saving showerheads with built-in aerators. Instead of a classic air conditioning system, the hotel uses concrete core activation, which heats and cools the building via the concrete wall and ceilings.

Energy

The hotel uses a rooftop photovoltaic system that covers 17% of its own energy usage. The pool temperature is maintained using heat from the cogeneration unit/heat recovery cooling unit that cools the server room.

Products

Products & Produce

Seezeitlodge grows its own herbs and sources ingredients from local producers. Sustainable products are prioritized, such as free-range eggs, venison from nearby hunting grounds, and MSC-certified fish.

Culture

Culture 

Through a long-standing partnership with “GuddZweck—Glasses without Borders,” the hotel provides glasses to those in need. The hotel has taken its LUMI Mobil food truck to street food festivals in the area and supports causes from kindergartens to village festivals.

The activity program includes yoga and mindfulness classes, tours through the herb garden and bee colonies, a guided hike with our hiking guide, or a Nordic walking tour by the lake.

A free electric shuttle from the nearby Türkismühle train station is offered. There are over 55 electric charging stations on property. Guest rooms, the restaurant, and the lobby are all barrier-free.

Educational opportunities are available to staff, including German language lessons. Employees can access furnished staff apartments on the grounds, catering at the Food Lodge, and unlimited use of the fitness center and spa.

We spoke with the team at Seezeitlodge Hotel & Spa to learn the latest on the hotel’s conscious journey.

What is your sustainability philosophy?

We focus on regionality whenever possible and act in an environmentally friendly manner. Our efforts were recognized in 2021 with Level 4 at GreenSign, a leading sustainability certificate in the European hotel industry. This means that we not only meet the required criteria but also act as an example of a sustainable hotel in Saarland.

How do you forge a connection to the local community and cultural surroundings?

We work closely with regional partners. In this way, we support small producers and act as an antithesis to factory farming. It is particularly important to us to maximize the processing of a product. Any leftover food is used to support social projects. One example is food-sharing, whereby discarded and unsaleable food is put to good use instead of being disposed of because they are still edible! The food is distributed to associations, food banks, and soup kitchens. We have also taken our LUMI Mobil food truck to street food festivals in the area and have supported kindergartens and village festivals in our village with donations in kind and money at parties and raffles.

What do you see as the biggest sustainability hurdle for hotels? How are you combating that?

In my opinion, it is important to communicate sustainability efforts and projects transparently to the guests. To convey the feeling of being able to relax and feel good with a clear conscience without having to compromise on anything. Having a large wellness area in particular is a challenge when it comes to sustainability. Nevertheless, there are technical refinements that allow us to act carefully here too.
