Cascais is a town of charming old houses and cobbled streets huddled around a graceful bay on Portugal’s spectacular Estoril Coast. A short walk from its historical centre stands the Farol Design Hotel, a daring architectural project directly overlooking the sparkling waters and delightful fishing boats of the local marina. Housed in a remodelled 19th-century mansion once owned by the Count of Cabral, the Farol was treated this year to a full-blown interior design makeover, inside and out. All spaces have been redefined in ever-so-cool black and white, making the contrast between modern, minimalist interior and historic, traditional exterior even more striking.
The terrace surrounding the original ocean-water pool has been updated with exquisite new deck chairs and chaises that evoke the distinct impression of floating on water, while the garden area has been rearranged to further blur the boundaries between the hotel and its stunning natural surroundings. Meanwhile, the new On the Rocks bar offers a selection of creative house cocktails, snacks and light lunches served in an ultra-contemporary, refurbished lounge area. For those in search of something a bit more filling, the new restaurant The Mix has launched fresh lunch and dinner menus rounded out by an extensively updated wine list – all in keeping with the hotel’s sleek, invigorating new look. The Mix is luxuriously spread over three distinct dining areas that flow gracefully into one another and, eventually, extend out towards the sandy beaches of the Portuguese coast. Nor are the renovated private areas any less exciting: the 31 guest rooms and two suites offer stunning ocean views – amongst them, nine Designer Rooms individually “dressed for bliss” by acclaimed Portuguese fashion designers. Room amenities include hydro-massage bath tub, air conditioning, cable TV, ISDN phone, level five modem line and, in some cases, a balcony or terrace. Though Lisbon is only a 25-minute drive away and the shopping streets and esplanades of downtown Cascais right around the corner, guests may find it hard to leave the dazzling design environment of the appropriately-named Farol Design Hotel. |
