Situated on the River Tiber, between the Apennine Mountains and the Tyrrhenian Sea, the "Eternal City" of Rome was once the centre of the mighty Roman Empire.
MORE
Rome (Roma) once governed a vast region that stretched from Britain to Mesopotamia. Between galleries, churches, historic palazzi, ruins, castles, and tombs, the Eternal City has many more monuments and museums than the average visitor has time to see. The expression "Roma, non basta una vita" ("Rome, a lifetime is not enough") pretty much sums it up, as even the most dedicated of native Romans is unlikely to see it all.
